Acer Iconia Tab A100 tablet is not the first 7 inch tablet, but this is one of the first device to run on Google’s Android Honeycomb software. Apart from running on Google’s Honeycomb, the tablet is also cost effective priced below $ 500. This gives the device an edge of competitors such as HTC Flyer and BlackBerry PlayBook. But does the machine deliver? Check out our exclusive Acer Iconia Tab A100 review to know the answer for yourself.

Acer Iconia Tab A100 Looks And Design

With A100 measuring at 7.6×4.5×0.5 inches and weighing 0.92 pounds, the tablet is very much of the same size and weight as that of Samsung Galaxy Tab and HTC Flyer. The front face of the tablet is surrounded by glossy plastic while the back is made up of dark gray plastic with the logo of Acer in the middle. The tablet has more of premium brushed aluminum back which makes it look very elegant. The tablet felt great while being gripped and its light weight makes it easily portable. Overall the look and design of the tablet impressed us.

Acer Iconia Tab A100 Display

Acer Iconia Tab A100 Honeycomb features a 7 inch LCD capacitive touch screen which is capable of displaying pictures of resolution measuring 1024×600 pixels. This is very much the same as that of Galaxy Tab and HTC Flyer. The colors displayed were sharp and crisp and we found that the horizontal viewing angles were good enough for a couple of people sitting and enjoying Youtube and HD videos.

However, when the screen was further tilted then it resulted in the colors reversing themselves. We were not impressed by the sunlight legibility of the screen and even with full brightness turned on, the screen contents were not visible outside in direct sunlight. The screen also got dirty very quickly and cleaning it frequently is quite annoying. On the top of the display you get a power button along with a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Acer Iconia Tab A100 Apps

The tablet is integrated with several applications such as

  • Google Search
  • Gmail
  • Maps
  • Document Viewer
  • Google Talk
  • Nemo Player
  • Aupeo Internet Radio
  • Docs To Go
  • Twitter
  • Facebook

There are a host of Google apps such as Google Books, Google Movies, Gmail and Google Music.

Acer Iconia Tab A100 Features

Iconia Tab A100 is the first 7 inch tablet to run on Android Honeycomb. At the same time it is powered by a dual-core 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor which ramps up operations of the device. The Iconia A100 is highly responsive and is nearly flawless in carrying out basic tasks. Android’s honeycomb can very well be one of the reasons for the fast responsiveness. The tab provides an internal storage of around 8GB which can be increased to 32GB with the help of microSD card.

Acer Iconia Tab A100 Keyboard

Iconia Tab A100 has a virtual QWERTY keyboard. At first, typing on the keyboard might seem a bit cramped but after some practice you will get used to it. The keys are quite responsive and responded to the slightest of touches. Overall the experience with the keyboard was same as that with smartphones.

Acer Iconia Tab A100 Camera

The tablet is equipped with a rear 5MP camera which clicks pictures of resolution measuring 2592×1944 pixels. The photos captured were average. In bright sunny light, the images captured were quite good with accurate colors. However, in dim light the images captured were not that great and they looked grainy filled with plenty of noise. Users also get a front facing 2MP which is great for video conferencing.

Acer Iconia Tab A100 Video

The tablet is capable of recording 720p videos with a smooth frame rate of 30 fps per second. The videos captured are quite smooth and so is the frame rate. The audio recording is also clear without the sound irritating the ears. We were a bit disappointed by the tablet’s inability to play 1080p videos on a consistent level.

Acer Iconia Tab A100 Performance

Equipped with a Nvidia Tegra 2 processor and 1GB of RAM, the performance of Acer Iconia Tab was quite good. We did not face any trouble in opening windows and the screens rotated pretty smoothly. The game play was also flawless and most of our operations were carried very smoothly.

Acer Iconia Tab A100 Battery Life

Acer said that Iconia Tab’s A100 1530mAh battery will last for about 5 hours while browsing internet with Wi-Fi and up to 4 hours during streaming videos. In our battery test, the battery lasted for well over 5 hours which is quite good.
