A new Facebook application for Android has been launched by Macrospecs. FriendMobilizer offers status control, notifications, photo access and more, all with what Macrospecs describe as minimal memory footprint.

FriendMobilizer Brings Facebook to Android

There’s also integration of photo uploads into your Android phone’s standard menu options, with a new “FriendMobilizer” choice in the “Share picture via” dialog. Images can then be captioned and commented on, with uploads happening in the background.

FriendMobilizer is available through the Android Market now. The company also offers free versions for Windows Mobile devices.

google-phoneIt seems as soon as the one new application hits the Android Market, the floodgates are opened and more quickly follow. Opera just recently launched their very famous Brower for Android and now we are seeing other companies release their browsers as well. Steel is the latest to give us more options when it comes to browsing the Internet on our T-Mobile G1.

Kolbysoft’s Steel is based off WebKit just as the G1’s browser and iPhone’s Safari. Eventually Steel will have plenty of great features including multiple windows, downloads, configurations, clear application history and cache and an on-screen keyboard. Yes you read it right, an on-screen keyboard will be added.

This come from behind browser is still in the early stages so don’t expect it to outshine Opera anytime soon, but definitely give it a spin. For those who cannot live without an on-screen keyboard, this just may be the browser for you as there has been no word on keyboards in other browsers at this time. We are certainly happy to see very useful applications come to the Android Market rather than another version of the tip calculator.

Shazam adds 2 million songs to database

One application we were excited to see on Android is Shazam. After using it so frequently on the iPhone it makes the transition that much easier. Now the only problem we have had with Shazam is the large focus on pop music while leaving many other genres in the dust.

Shazam has taken this into account and is now expanding their database by 2 million songs, that’s a database growth of 30 percent! This brings the grand total to over 8 million available songs. It appears that Shazam is gaining the upper hand in what seems to be a down hill battle. My personal music collection still stumps this application more often than not, but when it comes to the radio there is no contest.

Will Mils, head of music said, “This increase in our database cements Shazam’s position as the leading mobile music discovery service in the world. With our strong music alliances we gain access to the most relevant music well before many other music services, which ensures users can discover popular and niche music all over the globe.

No matter where they are, or what they’re listening to, users are taken on an unforgettable musical journey. This unequaled user experience and superior technology has made Shazam the perfect partner for mobile phone operators and handset manufacturers across the world.”

For now the services have been rolling out in only a few key markets including the UK.

We just found out that users who unlock their G1 will not be able to use the ShopSavvy application on their Android-powered handset. For the time being ShopSavvy is only available if you have a SIM card for a country that they currently support (US, UK, Germany, Austria, Poland, Czech Republic, Holland, Japan and China).

android_scan

This issue was first reported when A Phoenix user phoned ShopSavvy developers, Big In Japan, reporting that the application was not in the Android market. Turns out the user did not have a compatible SIM card in their G1; this creates a problem with the application being “internalized” for each market.

By not having a SIM card your location cannot be found resulting in the application not showing up. Developers say that if more users go the unlocked route they may adapt accordingly to fit the overall needs of customers, but until then users with an unlocked G1 are simply out of look.

wikitap

This is the first application that allows people to not only read articles, but also make immediate multimedia contributions on the go. WikiTap also enhances the Wikipedia experience on the G1 by bringing up relevant videos from vtap’s video index. You can also rate the relevance of the content for other WikiTap community members.

AT&T Mobility CEO, Ralph de La Vega, had the time to speak with the Web 2.0 Summit today about the iPhone 3G broadband limits. The talks mostly consisted of U-Verse and data limits that followed, but for some reason he slipped a bit of Android information in among all of the iPhone talk.

attlogo

It looks like AT&T’s position has not changed, an AT&T representative has stated, “We continue to evaluate the android platform, and if customers want it, we will offer it.” AT&T seems to likes the Android platform, but wishes to let it open up and evolve a little bit before taking on an Android-powered handset of their own. “De la Vega said AT&T continues to look at Google’s Android operating system but is not prepared to make any moves to carry any Android phones. He said the platform is still evolving and needs to open up even more to offer a wider array of non-Google applications.” Looks like AT&T is one of the few companies not using the opportunity to put Google’s Android OS. Who (other than myself) would like to see Android on AT&T next?

twidroid-android

Thomas Marban, the guy behind Popurls, has created the first Twitter application for Android, Twidroid. The name may be slightly odd but it is hard to confuse with the purpose of the application.

This application became available in the Android Market last Monday for free. We have been playing around with it for a few days now and it really has everything that you need in a Twitter application. However viewing links still takes you out of the application itself and into the Browser, and using this application will actually add Twidroid to the list of people you are following by default.

Twidroid still offers all of the functions that you need in a Twitter application such as postings, replies and direct messages, user detail information, follow/unfollow a user, and directly integrated photo-posting from camera. We predict this is the first Twitter application of many to come, eventually it will come down to which application has more to offer. We would love to see a Twitter application such as Twinkle come to android in the future. Do any of you have specific Twitter applications that you would like to see for Android?
