AT&T’s first Android device is coming down the pipeline next week, the Motorola Backflip, for $99 on a 2-year contract on March 7. Other than being disappointed with the industrial design of this device there might be something else to complain about. A recent hands-on by Engadget’s Chris Zeigler found that all of the default Google search was taken out of the device and replaced with Yahoo search (which will use Bing soon enough). Let me repeat that; all Google search is taken out of AT&T’s Android device in favor of Yahoo search.

The hopes of some users for this to land on T-Mobile has been squashed (for now). Dell are in talks with AT&T to offer the Mini 5 on their network possibly subsidized. The Mini 5 will indeed be compatible with the Android Market and there is a strong possibility for future Dell tablets to choose resistive screens over capacitive.

BGR just received word from an unnamed source at HTC that states the Desire will be headed to AT&T while the HTC Legend will land on Sprint. They also told them that Google will be looking to sell an AT&T 3G-compatible Nexus One directly through their web store, but the unit for AT&T network will be the Sense UI Desire. But unlike the current Nexus being only available via Google’s phone site, there will also be an option for AT&T customers to pick this puppy up in stores.

Although it’s the last major US carrier to launch Android phones, AT&T seems to be betting heavily on Google’s open source mobile platform.

According to Eldar Murtazin (who is, most of the time, right), AT&T has ordered 400,000 Motorola Backflip handsets, and it might even order more – which means that the carrier is hoping to sell them like hot cakes.

Motorola Backflip was officially announced two days ago, and it’s a unique handset, thanks to the reverse flip design.

The Backflip features Android 1.5 (so says Motorola), MotoBlur, a 3.1 HVGA touchscreen display, quad-band GSM and tri-band HSDPA connectivity (850 / 1900 / 2100 MHz), Wi-Fi, A-GPS, Android Webkit browser, 3.5mm headset jack, 5MP autofocus camera, and a full QWERTY keyboard.

I would still file this one under the very wishful thinking category, but there has been some recent rumors that a second Nexus One will be available. And in some hope-to-be-true news for AT&T users, that second Nexus One will come packing support for AT&T’s 3G bands.

No FCC filings this time, just pure rumor mill. Remember the Motorola Motus? We showed it off a few weeks back. It’s the one with that crazy, flip-out keyboard shot with that amazingly bad blurry cam. While initial reports had the device going to T-Mobile, it looks like some specs have caused a stir in that idea. Now labeled as having the appropriate 3G bands (850 and 1900) for AT&T, the Motus may be destined for the second-largest carrier in the United States.

Thanks to a tipster for Engadget Mobile, we’ve got some more details to send your way.

We know of a few readers out there who will be pretty excited to hear about this, so we’re glad that they might be getting a shot to officially play with Acer’s first shot into the Android smartphone market. We’re just excited to get another phone with the OS, especially one with a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor.

We have been hearing rumblings about how the HTC Hero was expected to become available with AT&T here in the US for a while now, and unfortunately at this time we still have nothing firm in regards to that. But we may have a glimmer of hope for any AT&T customer that is still holding out hope. Online retailer Negri Electronics is currently offering an unlocked HTC Hero that will support the AT&T 3G bands here in the US.
