AT&T removes Google search from Android in favor of Yahoo

March 2nd, 2010

AT&T’s first Android device is coming down the pipeline next week, the Motorola Backflip, for $99 on a 2-year contract on March 7. Other than being disappointed with the industrial design of this device there might be something else to complain about. A recent hands-on by Engadget’s Chris Zeigler found that all of the default Google search was taken out of the device and replaced with Yahoo search (which will use Bing soon enough). Let me repeat that; all Google search is taken out of AT&T’s Android device in favor of Yahoo search.

The hopes of some users for this to land on T-Mobile has been squashed (for now). Dell are in talks with AT&T to offer the Mini 5 on their network possibly subsidized. HTC Desire coming to AT&T, HTC Hero2 (Legend) coming to Sprint?

February 24th, 2010

BGR just received word from an unnamed source at HTC that states the Desire will be headed to AT&T while the HTC Legend will land on Sprint. They also told them that Google will be looking to sell an AT&T 3G-compatible Nexus One directly through their web store, but the unit for AT&T network will be the Sense UI Desire. But unlike the current Nexus being only available via Google’s phone site, there will also be an option for AT&T customers to pick this puppy up in stores.

AT&T reported to have ordered 400000 Motorola Backflips

January 10th, 2010

Although it’s the last major US carrier to launch Android phones, AT&T seems to be betting heavily on Google’s open source mobile platform.

According to Eldar Murtazin (who is, most of the time, right), AT&T has ordered 400,000 Motorola Backflip handsets, and it might even order more – which means that the carrier is hoping to sell them like hot cakes.

Motorola Backflip was officially announced two days ago, and it’s a unique handset, thanks to the reverse flip design.

The Backflip features Android 1.5 (so says Motorola), MotoBlur, a 3.1 HVGA touchscreen display, quad-band GSM and tri-band HSDPA connectivity (850 / 1900 / 2100 MHz), Wi-Fi, A-GPS, Android Webkit browser, 3.5mm headset jack, 5MP autofocus camera, and a full QWERTY keyboard.
