HTC Legend

The HTC Legend is a tablet-style Android smartphone, following up from the HTC Hero with a number of improvements all around.

The handset, which seems to be an upgrade of the HTC Hero, packs a 3.2-inch HVGA AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a 5-megapixel camera with an LED flash.

HTC have released new firmware for the Orange version of the HTC Hero. The software – version 2.73.61.66 for Orange – is available to download from HTC’s support site; however it looks unlikely to be the much-anticipated Android 2.1 firmware update.

The previous ROM for the Orange version of the Hero was 2.73.61.5, meaning this is likely a very minor update. However HTC do not indicate what particular changes have been made, so we’ll have to wait until an Orange Hero owner updates and lets us know any differences.

Modders start your engines! HTC have released the kernel source code for both the HTC Tattoo – their entry level Android device – and the Sprint version of the HTC Hero. Each package is available from HTC’s developer center.

It looks like Cellular South will also be rolling out an update for the HTC Hero, and similar to what we have heard with Sprint, they will also be giving the Hero OS 2.1, which is scheduled to arrive sometime in the first half of 2010. Read the rest of this entry »

Since someone caught an HTC Hero in the wild running Android 2.1 with a new HTC Sense UI, all Hero users here in the US are asking how and when will they be receiving the Eclair treatment. The answer from HTC and Sprint Twitter accounts points to early next year.

So who doesn’t like the SENSE UI on the latest HTC smartphones? I guess is safe to say that most of those who see it, fall in love with it. Heck, there’s even a leaked Sense UI ROM for Android 2.1 out there. You don’t have an HTC phone? Well, that might not be a problem now, as long as you have an Android-based phone.

We have been hearing rumblings about how the HTC Hero was expected to become available with AT&T here in the US for a while now, and unfortunately at this time we still have nothing firm in regards to that. But we may have a glimmer of hope for any AT&T customer that is still holding out hope. Online retailer Negri Electronics is currently offering an unlocked HTC Hero that will support the AT&T 3G bands here in the US.
