Sony Ericsson Xperia X10

At this point we don’t know if any United States carrier will pick up the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, but it wouldn’t surprise us if it shows up at this month’s CTIA (on AT&T or T-Mobile). It appears the phone is very near to release because Sony Ericsson has posted an unboxing video of the final retail packaging. Unfortunately this high-powered phone will ship with the older Android 1.6, but CNET Asia is reporting a Sony spokesperson said the X10 will be upgraded in the 2nd half of the year to a newer firmware. “It will be an Eclair variant, so it could be 2.1 or even 2.2″.

I wish this beautiful device was in my hands but it isn’t. This unboxing is done by a few guys from the Sony Ericsson team that run the company’s product launch blog.

Well, what’s this at the o2 website? Unless I’m very much mistaken that’s the Sony Ericsson X10 we fondled at Mobile World Congress. If you click on there’s actually no mention of the handset in the main shop, but we reckon it’s a sure sign that the new Android device is on the way to o2.

Actually, we noticed last month that the o2 accessories page listed the phone, so the evidence is stacking up now. Do let us know if you have any further information on this one.

O2 is not the only carrier that will offer the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 in the UK. Vodafone will sell the X10, too.

The Xperia X10 has appeared on Vodafone UK’s official website, in the coming soon section, and it looks like it will be available for purchase starting April.

The handset’s price is not mentioned. However, since smartphones like the Nokia N900 and BlackBerry Bold 9700 are offered by Vodafone for free on contract (with expensive voice and data plans), the X10 should also be free on select plans.

In case you don’t know yet, the Xperia X10 features Android 1.6, a 4 inch WVGA touchscreen display, HSPA, GPS, Wi-Fi, 8MP autofocus camera, and a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 will also be available via T-Mobile Germany, Rogers (in Canada), and NTT DoCoMo (in Japan).

What’s that, you say? There’s another Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 at the FCC? And this one sports the proper 3G bands for AT&T, Bell, Telus and Rogers? (Not to mention EDGE coverage.) Sho’ ’nuff. Read the rest of this entry »

Previously rumored for release on February 10th, it looks like the highly anticipated Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 could beat that launch date by nearly a month. Play.com is pegging the release date of the Xperia X10 for January 18th 2010. Play.com is a UK-based retailer so it’s still unclear when (or if ever) the Xperia X10 will hit the States. Only our friends across the pond are guaranteed to enjoy.

After we had the video demo of this spectacular smartphone, we notice that the registration page had taken out the February 10th launch. Now in its place is this: “Pre-Register – Expected launch: To be announced”. That’s not good, but at least we get more insight on SE’s plans to bring this phone to the “Americas”.

Can you say sticker shock? A report out of the Wall Street Journal is reporting the highly anticipated Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 will cost around 6,000 Swedish kronor (or $879) in stores. I’m aware the United States Dollar is sinking like a rock and we could face hyperinflation next year, but $879 is a little surprising even to me. I guess this explains why we haven’t seen more Snapdragon phones in the market yet.

We’re looking forward to the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 so much that we’ll watch videos that basically re-hash the same features we’ve already seen over and over again (at least this one’s in English!). The video above again showcases the ‘Rachael’ UI that makes us drool over the XPERIA X10 and it looks surprisingly speedy and very usable. Hopefully seeing the XPERIA X10 so polished already means that the February release date is more likely.

Who doesn’t remember the beautiful XPERIA X10 with its 4-inch capacitive touchscreen running at WVGA 480 x 854 resolution? If you say you don’t, you lie! Last time Chris over at SlashGear was with Sony Ericsson in London and had a good look at this new device from SE. Heck! He even brought some hands-on demo video.
