Sony Ericsson Xperia X10

At this point we don’t know if any United States carrier will pick up the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, but it wouldn’t surprise us if it shows up at this month’s CTIA (on AT&T or T-Mobile). It appears the phone is very near to release because Sony Ericsson has posted an unboxing video of the final retail packaging. Unfortunately this high-powered phone will ship with the older Android 1.6, but CNET Asia is reporting a Sony spokesperson said the X10 will be upgraded in the 2nd half of the year to a newer firmware. “It will be an Eclair variant, so it could be 2.1 or even 2.2″.

Well, what’s this at the o2 website? Unless I’m very much mistaken that’s the Sony Ericsson X10 we fondled at Mobile World Congress. If you click on there’s actually no mention of the handset in the main shop, but we reckon it’s a sure sign that the new Android device is on the way to o2.

Actually, we noticed last month that the o2 accessories page listed the phone, so the evidence is stacking up now. Do let us know if you have any further information on this one.

O2 is not the only carrier that will offer the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 in the UK. Vodafone will sell the X10, too.

The Xperia X10 has appeared on Vodafone UK’s official website, in the coming soon section, and it looks like it will be available for purchase starting April.

The handset’s price is not mentioned. However, since smartphones like the Nokia N900 and BlackBerry Bold 9700 are offered by Vodafone for free on contract (with expensive voice and data plans), the X10 should also be free on select plans.

In case you don’t know yet, the Xperia X10 features Android 1.6, a 4 inch WVGA touchscreen display, HSPA, GPS, Wi-Fi, 8MP autofocus camera, and a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 will also be available via T-Mobile Germany, Rogers (in Canada), and NTT DoCoMo (in Japan).

Last time Chris over at SlashGear was with Sony Ericsson in London and had a good look at this new device from SE. Heck! He even brought some hands-on demo video.
